Take Time to Encourage There is great power in encouraging, yet encouragement is a rare commodity. My wife encouraged me to write my first book on sales. I had several excuses, the top two being that "I didn't have the time and no one would be interested in buying the finished product." Despite these doubts, I self-published 2,000 copies of Sales - It Ain't Brain Surgery. The title was terrible and the cover design was worse. I sold 800 copies to friends and business acquaintances, but the big break came when I met Mr. John Shaver. Mr. Shaver owned a quaint little bookstore in Huntsville, Alabama. I went by and left a copy of my book with Mr. Shaver. All I asked in return was his objective opinion of the book's content. Mr. Shaver took the time to review my work and sent me the following handwritten note: Dear Byrd, I feel that you have found a true niche in the marketplace. You have sired the golden calf. Good Luck, John Shaver He went on to recommend a publisher, Rutledge Hill Press. Rutledge Hill took my manuscript and the refined version became The Book of Excellence - 236 Habits of Effective Salespeople. Thanks to Mr. Shaver's encouragement, this little gem has sold in excess of 200,000 copies and has been published in nine languages. Its success gave me the confidence to publish 14 additional books on the topics of sales, customer service, leadership, and motivation.
There's power in encouragement. Think back to your major achievements in life. You can also probably remember someone who encouraged you on. Perhaps without this person, you'd have never made it. This world needs encouragers. A few people who are able to look outside the scope of their own daily problems just long enough to encourage another human being not to give up on a dream. When you think about it, it doesn't take a whole lot of credentials to be an encourager. You don't have to have a particular degree. You don't have to have any letters after our name. You don't have to drive a particular car or achieve a certain income. All you have to do is be able to say four words: You can do it! Have a wonderFULL day! Your friend, ![]()
