The Power of Purpose

My vocation as an author and professional speaker has allowed me to visit with, and learn from, thousands of successful people from all walks of life. In 2000, I embarked on a mission to uncover the true essence of a winning lifestyle. To achieve this goal, I asked one hundred successful people - executives, sales professionals, entrepreneurs, professional athletes and coaches - the question, "In your opinion, what are the keys to a successful and fulfilling life?" To my surprise, I received 92 responses - over 4,000 years of wisdom - to this question. What I discovered were the following core values that fuel the hearts of winners:
  • Purpose
  • Passion
  • Positive Attitude
  • Character
  • Perseverance
  • Compassion
  • Priorities
The responses touched my heart and reaffirmed some strong convictions I hold as to what it takes to live a life of significance. I wanted to share this wisdom with others and was inspired to write the book, The Soul of Winning: What Fuels the Heart of a Winner.

Quite honestly, I was surprised that the number one response was Purpose. But, in the ten years since the survey and having experienced some life changing crucibles, I have come to understand the power of being involved in a purpose greater than self. When you reflect on the legacies of some of the world's most respected people - Mother Teresa, Billy Graham, Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Abe Lincoln, and Martin Luther King - you understand that they were committed to a cause greater than self. The following story, featured in The Soul of Winning, illustrates what happens when one commits to being a part of something greater than self…

The Story of Kyle

As we enter a new year, I encourage you to get involved in a purpose greater than self. If we'd all commit daily to one simple act of kindness - a handwritten note, a smile, a prayer, a phone call, our presence - we would give hope to the hopeless.

And remember, it's never too late to start living the legacy you want to leave behind.

May your 2010 be a year of peace, prosperity and significance.
