Share Your Flame As I travel and visit with people across the country, there remains one constant – far too many are lonely, confused and frightened about their future. Why? I believe that people are caught in the high tech whirlwind of change and uncertainty. Too many are personally bankrupt, as their self worth is dictated by their net worth. What is missing is the awesome power of the human touch - a smile, a pat on the back, a hug, hand-written notes, etc. We need more servant leaders, heroes who realize the worth of people; people who understand the power of love and compassion; people who understand and value the dignity of others. These individuals feel the hurt of others and understand that compassion is a powerful source of energy, a force that can change lives. I feel passionately that servant leadership is the "High Touch" solution to many of our problems in the work place and home place. Following is a beautiful story illustrating the power of serving others: Joe had been asked to get up at six in the morning and drive a crippled child 50 miles to the hospital. He didn't really want to do it, but he didn't know how to say no. A woman carried the child out to the car and set him next to the driver's seat, mumbling thanks through her tears. Joe said everything would be all right and drove off quickly. After a mile or so the child inquired shyly, "You're God, aren't you?" "I'm afraid not, little fellow," replied Joe. "I thought you must be God," said the child. "I heard my mother praying next to my bed asking God to help me get to the hospital so I could get well and play with the other boys. Do you work for God?" "Sometimes, I guess," said Joe, "but not regularly. I think I'm going to work for him a lot more from now on." Alone, hearts are one of life's most fragile things but together their passion can accomplish the impossible. Compassionate hearts – yours and mine – are the wings of hope that unleash the unlimited potential of the human spirit. My prayer is that many will respond to this call for more servant leaders. If this occurs, thousands will achieve their dreams and, most importantly, will understand that there is hope for the future. Hope is the spark of life. Share YOUR flame!
