"Flush it and move on!"

That was the consistent response from my mother when I complained about things. Even though Mom had an eighth grade formal education, she had a PhD in common sense (it's not real common in today's society). She realized that I was the only one who could change my life, and her "flush it and move on" trademark response forced me, from an early age, to accept personal responsibility.

When I persisted in complaining about outside forces (people, events, etc) that were creating problems in my life, Mom responded with, "What are you going to do about it?" "But Mom, you don't understand." Her response was still the same, "What are you going to do about it?" Again, she wouldn't allow me to avoid personal responsibility for my life.

As you start a new year, I encourage you to accept personal responsibility for committing to the simple acts of daily discipline necessary to achieve your personal and professional goals. Following are five disciplines that will help you in the key areas of your life:

  • Health – Exercise 10 minutes per day
  • Relationships – Send 10 hand-written notes of appreciation per week
  • Career – Read 10 pages per day from a book on personal development
  • Finances – Save 10% of your income into a retirement account
  • Spiritual – Spend 10 minutes per day in solitude

Before I sign off, I would like to share three keys that are essential to growing your life to the richly rewarding Season of Significance…

  1. Get passionately involved in something greater than self
  2. Commit to the simple acts of daily discipline necessary to achieve your goals
  3. Don't quit before the blessing!

And, when you start to blame and complain, remember what Mom would say… "Flush it and move on!"

May your life always be green and growing.
