Got The Right People?

To perform at peak performance, your team must have the right players. It's been said that people are our greatest asset, but I would like to modify that statement to read, the right people are the team's greatest assets. Conversely, the wrong people are the team's greatest liabilities. Following is a chart that will help you determine whether you have the right people on your team…

Got The Right People?

Quadrant One Players: Right Results/Right Behaviors (Top left quadrant). This is the ultimate team player. They play by the rules and achieve the desired results. They both honor and respect the team's core values and behaviors. High performing teams have a majority of these individuals. The Power of We prevails.

Quadrant Two Players: Wrong Results/Right Behaviors (Bottom left quadrant). Even though these players aren't currently achieving the desired results, they play by the rules and honor the team's core values and behaviors. As long as they are coach-able and willing to change, these individuals can become valuable contributors. With the right knowledge, skills, discipline, and attitude, these folks can become Quadrant One Players.

Quadrant Three Players: Right Results/Wrong Behaviors (Top right quadrant). These players are dangerous, as they tend to play by the rules as long as they serve their selfish goals. They tend to bend the rules to achieve the results. They are often prima donnas and don't get along well with other team members. Their actions can result in integrity issues, as they can compromise the team's core values and behaviors. These folks are typically ego driven and it's all about The Power of Me. Too many of these players will destroy the team's spirit and their collective egos will lead to chaos. Example: Enron.

Quadrant Four Players: Wrong Results/Wrong Behaviors (Bottom right quadrant). These individuals don't achieve the desired results and don't play by the rules. They typically don't care and are happy with being mediocre. They tend to have a "half empty" attitude and often take great pride in being the rotten apple. And yes, when this type of behavior is tolerated, they will spoil the whole team. These are the people who need to be made available to society.

Do you have the right players on your team?
