What Does It Take
To Be A Champion?

What does it take to become a champion? I asked Tom Coffey, a good friend and successful insurance industry executive whom I feel is a true champion, as to how he would answer this question. Following are Tom's words of wisdom…

When most of us think of great champions, our thoughts turn to sports figures that have excelled in their respective endeavors. These individuals typically own many trophies, awards, rings, and the like, which indicate their many accomplishments.

Talent, discipline, and focus, all of which are notable virtues, and to a large degree, determine their success. But, as I thought more about real champions, I realized they were much, much more. The aforementioned merely produces winners but not necessarily champions. Champions are all winners but all winners are not champions.

Champions are individuals who encompass many virtues beyond winning. It's about who they are as individuals; qualities they possess which endure throughout their lives. Champions are known by their integrity, values, unselfishness, passion, and giving to others. They are known as coaches, teachers, leaders, mentors, and friends. They are trusted, respected, and revered by those who know them and have gained from their relationships. God, family, and country are not to be compromised. They live quietly and unselfishly but will serve their country and fellow man when called upon. They have a strong work ethic, are focused, physically fit, and admired. Champions are compassionate about their fellow man. Champions are students of their beliefs and read constantly, improving their knowledge and their wisdom.

Winners are known by the awards they have received; Champions are known by what they have given to others and the people they have grown. Winners win and fade over time. Champions' contributions just continue and grow over a lifetime. We all know winners and we all know champions. We will remember a champion for a lifetime. Aren't you glad that one or many have touched your life? I am blessed that I have been touched by many. In most cases, I am proud to call them my friends.
